Pennfield, in cooperation with Dr. Glenn Bressler, Penn State University, and Record USSR Grain Crop Announced The U. S. Department of Agriculture said recently that the Soviet Union’s 1973 gross grain crop is expected to reach a record 215 million tons. In a speech on October 26, Secretary General Leonid Brezhnev stated that the USSR’s 1973 gross grain crop is expected to reach 215 million tons. Since a crop of this magnitude is not inconsistent with recently received information on har vesting and data on domestic grain purchasing by the Soviet Government, the USDA is revising its estimate of the 1973 grain crop accordingly. The Soviet Union’s planned goal for 1973 is 197.4 million tons. Last year’s production was 168 million tons, and the previous record was 187 million tons achieved in 1970. Diplomat 24 Hour Service »,v , Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 10,1973 ♦fV ' Since harvesting weather in European USSR and the western part of Asiatic USSR was less favorable than usual, the proportion of usable grain in the current gross harvest figure is probably somewhat below nor mal. The Soviet crop announcement did not include a breakdown by type of grain. With the 215 million ton estimate for total grains, the USDA is estimating U.S.S.R. wheat production at a record 105 million tons. Last year wheat output totaled 86 million tons. The Department’s estimate for coarse grain (rye, barley, oats ' k K several other companies are responsible for the building's design and construction. Agri built and equipped the house, while Big Dutchman supplied a high speed feeding system; Amspec, styrofoam in sulation; Aspec, plastic floors; Favorite Manufacturing, the nest works and Reynolds Aluminum covered the exterior with siding. and com) has been increased to 93 million tons, up from 70 million tons in 1972. The estimate for miscellaneous grain (buckwheat, millet, rice and pulses) production is 17 million tons. In 1972 miscellaneous grain output totaled 12 million tons. In view of the large purchases of foreign grains already made by the USSR for 1973-74, this huge crop should enable the Soviet Union not only to meet both its domestic and foreign requirements but also to increase carry-in stocks for 1974-75. •■aswssafc.^. 21
