Add Gelbviehs
Curtis Breeding Service has
announced the addition of a new
beef breed, the Gelbviehs.
Semen from two young
Gelbvieh bulls -- King and Lucky -
- is now available. Both are ex
ceptionally well-muscled,
smooth, long-bodied bulls, ac
cording to Curtiss.
The Gelbvieh breed is a large,
fast gaining breed which has
regularly won the comprehensive
carcass shows held in West
Germany since 1961. They have
an enviable reputation for meat
quality, selling for premium
prices in Germany.
The origin of the Gelbvieh, as is
the case with most breeds, is not
known. Cattle of this type have
existed in the Franconian area of
northern Bavaria (the triangle
area between Wurzburg, Bam
berg and Nurnberg) for many
centuries. Because of the
similarity in color of the Gelb
vieh, Limousin and other Yellow
breeds in Europe, many people
assume they had a common
ancestory.
German Gelbvieh cattle are
bred for beef and milk produc
tion. Therefore, milk recording is
compulsory for all herdbook cows
and 20.8 percent of the Gelbvieh
cow population are under milk
control.
The German Gelbvieh is an
early maturing, fertile breed. In
spite of the heavy birth weights of
the calves, there are scarcely any
calving difficulties, as the weight
is primarily due to the ex-

females are known as regular

fertility is illustrated by the
following 1971 figures which are
based on breed averages and not

BY THE OLO TIMER
From Wilfred Beaver, Sparta,
WI : I remember the scissors
grinder who came around the
country and into town to grind
a sharp edge on knives and
blades of all types and sizes He
had a full stock of tools, parts
and home spun wisecracks to
liven up the time he spent
In return for his services he
would be given some money, farm
produce and, if the day was late
a night’s lodging and meals
We children would pray for the
time when our family would be
the lucky one to offer this fellow
lodging and to hear the many
tall tales of his travels In his
bags would be, peppermint sticks
and material for a taffy pull be
fore bedtime We could smell the
men smoking cigars and exchang
ing adult tall tales as we slipped
into dreamland
It surely was a time to remem
ber when that elderly gentleman
would pay us a visit
