Lancaster Farming, Saturday,OctoberlS, 1973 Add Gelbviehs Curtis Breeding Service has announced the addition of a new beef breed, the Gelbviehs. Semen from two young Gelbvieh bulls -- King and Lucky - - is now available. Both are ex ceptionally well-muscled, smooth, long-bodied bulls, ac cording to Curtiss. The Gelbvieh breed is a large, fast gaining breed which has regularly won the comprehensive carcass shows held in West Germany since 1961. They have an enviable reputation for meat quality, selling for premium prices in Germany. The origin of the Gelbvieh, as is the case with most breeds, is not known. Cattle of this type have existed in the Franconian area of northern Bavaria (the triangle area between Wurzburg, Bam berg and Nurnberg) for many centuries. Because of the similarity in color of the Gelb vieh, Limousin and other Yellow breeds in Europe, many people assume they had a common ancestory. German Gelbvieh cattle are bred for beef and milk produc tion. Therefore, milk recording is compulsory for all herdbook cows and 20.8 percent of the Gelbvieh cow population are under milk control. The German Gelbvieh is an early maturing, fertile breed. In spite of the heavy birth weights of the calves, there are scarcely any calving difficulties, as the weight is primarily due to the ex- Good Holstein- 800 pounds and up 39.00 - 43.00.
