During the business part of the meeting, it was announced that the established Chapter bee hives had been inspected by the county apiary inspector, with all hives being disease free. There was also some discussion of pur chasing 10 additional bee hives which are reportedly for sale. It was decided the Chapter would try to purchase these bees at a reasonable price for resale to students. All members were urged to S' Gideon Dienner 768-8497 show their livestock projects at local fairs this summer, and results were given for those students who had already shown animals. The following announcements concerning future FFA events were made The Chapter window exhibit is not finished, and must be com pleted in time for the Kutztown Fair. Transportation must also be arranged for taking it to and from Kutztown and Reading. The Berks County FFA Dairy and Livestock Judging contests will be held Friday, August 24 at the Kutztown Fair Each County Chapter is allowed to have six members in each contest. Stere, Hay Expert, Dies James B Stere, a market research engineer for Sperry New Holland, and nationally recognized forage authority, died July 25 after an illness of several months. Stere joined New Holland in 1955 as a product manager for crop driers and assumed his position in the market research department in 1963 He was the recipient of the 1970 Pennsylvania Grassland Council Award for his “outstanding contributions to the state’s grassland agriculture.” The award was presented him during the 11th Forage Conference at Pennsylvania State University. Stere had been a counselor to Penn State agricultural engineers and agronomists in hay drying methods and procedures. The machinery he recommended greatly improved productivity and harvesting of forage crops. A native of Centre County, he earned his bachelor degree in agricultural engineering at Penn State and attended Carnegie- Mellon University, Pittsburgh. A member of First United Methodist Church, he also was a member and fellow of the American Society of Agricultural Engineers and formerly was chairman of the society’s North Atlantic region. He was past chairman of the Crop Dryer Manufacturing Council of the Farm Equipment Institute. In addition to his widow, he is survived by a son, James B. Stere Jr, Lancaster; three grand children; one brother, Marion W. Stere, Unionville; and one sister, Mrs. Carl Wild, State College.
