‘lnvolvement’ (Continued From Page 22} are Holstein breeders, with about 50 head of milk cows and 50 calves and heifers. They are members of Lehigh Valley Dairy Cooperative. They have four children. Cindi is a graduate of Elco High School and plans to attend St. Luke’s Nursing School in Bethlehem. She is working this summer as a part time nurse’s aide at Cedar Haven to get some experience. Connie is 15 and a junior at Elco. Kirby is 14, and a ninth grader, and Ricky, 12, is in the eighth grade at the middle school. The Horst children are members of the Cedar Crest dairy club and two of the family dogs, a cocker spaniel and a basset are having the privilege of attending dog obedience classes as 4-H projects of Connie and Ricky. Mrs. Horst says of the children’s 4-H activities, “We spend most of the summer running around.” Janis is a member of the Lebanon Area Fair Committee. The Fair runs a full week, and the 4-H Fair is a big event for Lebanon County 4-H’ers. Janis says, “4-H’ers are encouraged to exhibit anything they’ve made and it is round-up time for most of the 4-H animals. There is always lots of interest and the 4-H part seems to get larger every year.” Lebanon County’s Dairy princess contest is just two years old, and Janis has been an active planner for the event both years. This year, according to Janis, the committee made a great effort during June is Dairy Month to promote not just the contest, but dairy products themselves. She says, “We know farmers drink Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 14,1973 milk, so we felt we needed to get more city people and off the farm people interested in our product.” So, to spark interest they had a cow coloring contest and a poster contest, and the evening of the pageant they had a cow milking contest plus free milk, inexpensive sundaes and tastes of the entries in the dairy foods contest.
