These results will be investigated further in an $B,OOO project sponsored by the American Mushroom Institute. The research will attempt to determine optimum levels of oil to be added in relation to microbiological activity and mushroom yields. The studies will examine responses of various mushroom strains to the addition of vegetable oil to compost twice during mushroom production. In charge of the research is Dr. Lee C Schisler, professor of plant pathology. Working with the Agricultural Experiment Station at Penn State, Dr Schisler hopes also to develop improved and alternate nutrient layers or substrates for growing mushrooms. The Penn State scientist _and associates will, in addition, study nutrients used by mushroom myceimm, the mam part of the mushroom fungus. This analysis will determine the relationship of mycelium nutrition to yield.
