Sdiweiker Discusses Drug Abuse Rehabilitation WASHINGTON-The com munications gap between parents and children is one of the major causes of drug abuse in America, U.S. Senator Richard S. Sch weiker (R-Pa.) asserted. Sdiweiker, ranking Republican on the Senate Subcommittee on Alcoholism and Narcotics, said it is important for parents and children “not to make their two worlds so different that one becomes unbelievable or unrelated to the other.” He pointed to the social ac ceptability of alcohol use as a “double standard” that turns young people to drug abuse, “even though only 10 percent of people who drink become alcoholics, the fact that you’re dealing with such a high per centage of the (overall) population (means) you have many more alcoholism problems 3-3010 2- 3- 4- 5020 420 COMBINES TRACTORS 65 U °o' 2-165 1130 175 180 856 Cub M, MTA 240 300 than you do drug (problems),” Schweiker said. “I think this is something we hide under the rug; that we forget and explain away. This is part of the parental gap today.” Schweiker made his comments on his monthly radio and television report to Penn sylvania. His guests were Arthur and Ardelle Shultz, directors of Today, Inc., drug rehabilitation program in Bucks County, Pa., and two “graduates” of the program. Melanie Carson, one of the reformed addicts, cited group therapy as the most important factor in her successful bout with drugs. “That’s why I’m still clean today,” she said, adding that “encounter groups” helped her develop self-respect, integrity and self-esteem. Brewer, assistant professor of ornamental horticulture at The Pennsylvania State University. 1850 2-1950 4-1855 2150 PHONE 717-866 2138 ' Lhhcasfer Farming. Saturday, May 12,1973' Regardless of fertilizer treatment, increase in stem diameter was greater in full sunlight than in shade. Dr. Brewer and associates found that no reasonable amount of nitrogen would overcome this situation. Nitrogen was applied at rates of 200 and 600 pounds per acre. The young yews also received 100 pounds of phosphorus per acre. The young yews also received 100 pounds of phosphorus per acre and SO pounds of potassium. While the yew should be started in partial shade in a plant nursery, Dr. Brewer suggests that plant nurserymen remove shade from seedling yews as soon as possible. In this manner the Thayer yew'can grow to saleable size in sunlight as rapidly as possible. The Penn State researchers found that winter damage was greatest among plants receiving 600 pounds of nitrogen per acre. Entire branches and sometimes entire plants were lolled by winter injury where 600 pounds of nitrogen were used per acre. , Since the amount of nitrogen used in these studies was pur posely very high, the results pressure may have gotten you involved in drugs, but it also got you out.” Also discussed on the program were the differing values shared by parents and children. Mrs. Schultz said, “Our generation was goal directed, but that is not ' enough for , the younger generation. They’ve seen their parents achieve these things and it no longer has the same im pact.” Mr. Schultz said one of the keys to the Today, Inc., program is convincing young drug abusers that “there is nothing wrong with being conventional. It is not a dirty word,” he said.- BACKHOES and Payloaders FOR SALE Terex Articulated loader Michigan 125 Payloader Michigan .175 Payloader (2) Hough'payloaders Case W 9 payloader Lorain payloader (2) Case 1537 Uniloaders (2) Melroe 600 bobcats (3) Melroe 500 bobcats Owattona Mustang Universal Uniloader Int 3200 Uniloader New Case 580 CK loader backhoe Ford Major loader Backhoe 3- 580 CK loader Backhoe 4- 530 CK loader Backhoe Case 680 CK loader Ford 4500 loader Backhoe Ford 3400 loader Backhoe MORE ARRIVING DAILY WENGER’S FARM MACHINERY, INC. So. Race St. Myerstown, Pa. Ph. 717-866-2138 should warn growers to be cautious in attempting to “push” yews by applying heavy rates of nitrogen, Dr. Brewer suggests. He says the various cultivars or varieties of yews have increased greatly in popularity during the past 25 years. As a result, they are now grown in large quantities throughout the Commonwealth. Yews have become one of the most popular evergreens because of their rich, dark green, needle like foliage and a variety of growth forms. They also tolerate shade, a feature not common to many shrubs. Representative To Club Congress Named By E-town- Donegal Club The Elizabethtown-Donegal 4- H Community Club met recently at the W. I.
