In the summer, both spend the greater part of their time on the camp site, Dave supervising the grounds, and Agnes, a registered nurse, in the small infirmary as camp nurse. Dave’s work with the Boy Scouts started long before he became camp ranger. When his oldest son was a Cub, Dave was drafted as a committee chair man Then he took on the job of assistant scout master, and later became Scout leader, a job he held for 18 years. As ranger he still works directly with the boys them selves, helping them with merit badge projects and supervising and working with them on service and conservation projects at the camp throughout the year. Dedicated to both Boy Scouting and his job, Dave talks at length about his work at the camp, taking visitors on hikes or on bumpy, often breath-taking rides over the rough trails of Camp Mack. He points out the various troop sites, stopping now and then to show where certain areas have been marked off for new patrol sites, and where other areas have been designated for “no cam- Wish I’d Said That “A great many people han dle the truth carelessly— others never touch it at all.” —Mrs. Gary Hiott, The Pick ens (S.C.) He takes his visitors up a steep trail to the camp’s water silo, a massive construction that holds 50,000 gallons of water that is piped to all the troop areas, and to the swimming pool. Guests are guided along a tour of the rustic buildings on the reservation, most of them built in the last five years—the Health Lodge, a well-equipped in firmary, Blair House, used for meetings and winter camping; the Commissary, which houses the camp’s food service, and the Trading post, a supply store for campers; the large staff mess hall with its adjoining offices; and the rustic chapel, quiet and secluded among the trees. One of the most popular spots at the camp is the 42 by 82 foot all-aluminum swimming pool, flanked by small buildings that ONCE ACROSS THE FIELD DOES IT r, s P. L. ROHRER & BRO., INC. Another popular spot is the camp’s rifle range, where a hunter’s safety course is con ducted during the summer and where Scouts work on rifle merit badges. A current project at the camp is enclosing the pavilion on the Webelo troop site for winter camping. If this is successful, Dave explains, other pavilions will also be enclosed. In the five years he has been ranger, Dave has become a well known figure to Boy Scouts from all over a two-county area, as well as their leaders and parents. Highly respected for his knowledge in Scouting and his skill at maintaining the camp, he plays an important role in keeping Camp Mack one of the most remarkable camps in the Scout Council.
