When in doubt, wash one dish for several weeks and then compare it to the rest of the set to see if there is any change in color. Patterns can be affected by long exposure to alkaline washing solutions. Shorter washing time is recommended by most dishwasher manufacturers for all fine china. Some dishwashers feature a “china and crystal” cycle, which is a short wash, two rinses, and a drying time. Most dishwashers will have either a “short wash” or “light soil” cycle. This can he used' as a china wash cycle because they usually consist of the short wash, two rinses, and drying time, as does the “china and crystal” cycle. When none of these cycles are on a dish washer, the regular cycle can be used by putting detergents only in the main wash - instead of in both washes. The regular dishwashing temperature of 140 to 160 degrees is proper for fine china. ' Fine china is light weight and thin. When pieces of the same size are loaded next to each other in a dishwasher, the pressure of the water may cause the pieces to bump at the top forcefully enough to chip slightly. Proper loading of fine china is by alternate sizes, i.e., a plate next to a saucer or bread and bptter plate, etc. By alternating, the tops cannot reach each other and no chipping can result. Water spots caused by water that has more than average mineral content can be prevented by using a rinse aid made especially for automatic dish washers. A rinse aid sheets water off quickly so that china will be shiny and bright, the way fine china should look after washing and drying.
