Stager graduated from Quarryville High School, Franklin and Marshall College and from Temple Law School. He has never practiced law but uses this knowledge to conduct his business successfully. He settles many estates and in the slack winter months from January to April he figures income tax for many people. He served as Treasurer of Lancaster County for several years. This farm is not limited to the production of fish. Elwood Frank farms the tillable ground. He has one hired man and together they raise eight and one-half acres of tobacco, 24 acres of corn, 20 to 22 acres of hay, six or seven acres of wheat and seven or eight acres of barley They finish about 35 head of Angus steers a year. They are always kept in the barn. Mary Stager, the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs. Frank Beane, grew up in the Leaman Place-Paradise area. She graduated from Coatesville High School and the Lancaster General Hospital School of Nursing. She did private duty nursing for nine years and was a staff nurse for the Lancaster County Department of Health at the St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lancaster for 10 years before marriage. When asked if she missed nursing after she married, she said, “No, I was too busy to miss it.” She enjoys the fish hatchery business and travels to many states with her husband. Many times a new store opening for business will give free goldfish for advertising or sometimes for their anniversary and Mr. and Mrs. Stager will drive many miles to be there and hand out the fish. They tell the customers how to care for the fish. When queried as to the mistakes most people make in caring for goldfish Mrs. Stager replied, “Children overfeed them. All they need is a few grains for each fish. They should be fed regularly, at the same time every day. Care should be exercised in changing the water, not to change the temperature too rapidly. Fish can’t stand sudden change of water temperature. Also fish should be handled with wet hands.” Stagers belong to Zion United Church of Christ, New Providence. Mr. Stager has served as elder several times. Mrs. Stager sings soprano in the church choir. Both are members of the Gleaners and Four Square Sunday School class. This group meets once a month besides Sundays. They have projects to make money for the building fund. They serve wedding receptions, have food stands at sales and serve about 600 people at their annual turkey supper the first Saturday of December. Mary is an active member of the Robert Fulton Chapter of Eastern Star. She served as chaplain five years and has been Electa for three years. They meet once a month. She helps with their projects. She says “I do enjoy the Star work.” Mrs. Stager says “I like to read. I belong to the Christian Herald Family Book Shelf and get books each month. I like inspirational books.” She also has hobbies of collecting silver spoons and souvenir plates. She has 57 spoons. Most of them are family (Continued On Page 24}
