Lawn Mower Safety
Each year hundreds of people
are injured by power lawn
mowers. Careless operation of
power mowers can result in lost
toes, fingers and other injureis.
Unfortunately, children are the
ones that have accidents more
often than adults. Parents should
provide proper safety instruction
to their children before allowing
them to mow the lawn. Above all,
parents should set an example of
safe operation with all types of
power equipment.
The blade of a rotary mower
has the power to throw rocks,
sticks, and other objects at very
high speeds for distances of 50
feet or more. Rotary mowers are
also very dangerous to use on
wet, slippery, or steep lawns.
Always maintain the mower by
checking all bolts and nuts,
guards, and other parts to be sure
they are tight. Stop the engine

and disconnect the spark plug
wire before checking or working
under the mower. When starting
the mower keep feet well away
from the blade and never stand
near the discharge opening.
Other important safety rules to
follow include;
—Stop the engine whenever
you leave the mower, even for a
moment.
—Never add fuel to a running
engine.
—Keep children out of the yard
whpn mowing.
—Never allow anyone to ride
the mower with you—it was made
with one seat.
—Be extremely careful when
using mowers on slopes—never
mow up and down; if you slip,
your feet and hands can be in
jured quickly.
—Do not over-speed the engine
or alter governor settings. Ex
cessive speed is dangerous and
can shorten mower life.
—Stop the engine before
pushing mower across drives,
walks or roads.

—Never leave a starter in the

—Disengage clutches and
shift into neutral before starting

Power mowers are designed to
provide the ultimate in safety and
efficienty However, as with any
type of power equipment,
carelessness or error on the part
of the operator can result in
serious injury. Power mowers,
particularly the riders, have
increased horsepower, more
attachments and controls than
every before. It becomes more
important that you know the
controls and how they work.
