Lawn Mower Safety Each year hundreds of people are injured by power lawn mowers. Careless operation of power mowers can result in lost toes, fingers and other injureis. Unfortunately, children are the ones that have accidents more often than adults. Parents should provide proper safety instruction to their children before allowing them to mow the lawn. Above all, parents should set an example of safe operation with all types of power equipment. The blade of a rotary mower has the power to throw rocks, sticks, and other objects at very high speeds for distances of 50 feet or more. Rotary mowers are also very dangerous to use on wet, slippery, or steep lawns. Always maintain the mower by checking all bolts and nuts, guards, and other parts to be sure they are tight. When starting the mower keep feet well away from the blade and never stand near the discharge opening. Other important safety rules to follow include; —Stop the engine whenever you leave the mower, even for a moment. —Never add fuel to a running engine. —Keep children out of the yard whpn mowing. —Never allow anyone to ride the mower with you—it was made with one seat. —Be extremely careful when using mowers on slopes—never mow up and down; if you slip, your feet and hands can be in jured quickly. —Do not over-speed the engine or alter governor settings.
