New Hog Outbreaks New hog cholera outbreaks at widely separated sites have caused concern among State and Federal veterinarians over the need for greater vigilance, reports the U.S. Department of Agriculture. New cases were reported in Ocean County, N.J., and Tattnall County, Ga. in April by veterinarians with USDA’s Animal and Plant Health In spection Service (APHIS). Hog cholera was also found within the past month in Texas, North Carolina and South ROUGH & TUMBLE TRACTOR PULL ASSOCIATION THFIP FIPCT COMPLETELY LOCAL TRACTOR To Be Held on May 20, 1972 8 A.M. All the infected herds have been eliminated. “However, these States, except Texas, were without hog cholera for periods of four months up to two yers before these outbreaks,” said Dr. Er nest E. Saulmon, deputy ad ministrator of APHIS. “This shows that the diesease can remain undetected in a chronically-infected (and unreported) herd, or can reap pear when hogs are fed raw pork scraps ,or uncooked garbage.” “We have made great progress ANNOUNCES ALL CLASSES AND TYPE OF PULL USED UNDER P.T.P.A. RULES in the cooperative State-Federal hog cholera eradication program,” Dr. Saulmon said. "Forty-one States are now hog cholera-free, but these recent outbreaks confirm that we still have work to do.” Dr. Saulmon urged swine owners to report sick pigs promptly to county agents or livestock inspectors. A State or Federal veterinarian will examine the herd. If the pigs have cholera, the farmer will be paid State and Federal in demnities, and the herd will be destroyed to stop the infection. “Under no circumstances should a farmer send sick pigs to market—spreading the disease,” Saulmon said. "And of course he should not feed uncooked gar bage to his swine.” APHIS veterinarians suggest that swine owners isolate newly purchased pigs from the rest of the herd for 30 days as a precaution against cholera and other diseases. Trucks should be cleaned and disinfected after every swine movement. All infected or exposed swine in the recent outbreaks have been destroyed, and iademnities paid to the owners. APHIS and State veterinarians are checking swine movements and other contacts in the outbreak areas to locate the source of infection and to be sure the disease has not spread. Quarantines against swine movements are imposed in the affected counties. Apples The stockpile of Pennsylvania apples in cold storage was nearly halved during March, according to an announcement from the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. The total on hand at the end of March was 26,362,000 pounds with Red Delicious and Rome varieties each rei 'resenting about a third of this total. Disappearance of the apples, which includes shrinkage as well as sales, amounted to 23,754,000 pounds during the 31 day period. In the face of three successive bumper harvests of Penn sylvania apples the total on hand at this time of the year is the highest in history. Pennsylvania is the fourth leading apple producing state in the nation.
