Today, washing is no joke. It almost takes a col lege degree in laundering be fore you can wash a pair of nylons. The controversy over whether to use a phosphate or non-phosphate or return to laundry soap is enough to con fuse anyone, even a trained ecologist. Obviously, the final solution is yet to be found. Meanwhile, you have to consider all sorts of variables if you want clean clothes: the softness or hardness of the water; its temperature; the type, color and flame-retar dent protection of the fabric; the kind of soil to be removed; the size of the wash load; plus your own standards of clean ing and environmental con siderations. One laundry expert sug gests the following tips to lessen wash day confusion: First, save all hangtags and laundry instructions for ref erence in case memory fails. Second, dissolve detergent and/or bleach in the water before you add your clothes. Then sort laundry and wash heavily soiled items sepa rately. Delicate fabrics re quire different handling.
