Ph. 397-3539 Farm Vacation Workshop A farm vacation workshop will be held at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Building at Tunkhannock, Wednesday March 29. The workshop will begin at 9:30 A.M. with registration and cof fee. Among the topics to be discussed are: Farm Vacations Why Get In and Why Stay In!; Experience in Farm Vacation Hosting, Promotion and Ad vertising; and Concerns of the Farm Vacation Host. Potential operators and current operators of farm vacation businesses are invited to attend, says Murray W. Fisk, Wyoming county agent, and chairman of the workshop. Operators and managers of vacation farms as well as governmental and educational specialists will lead discussions and participate in panel discussions. The workshop will adjourn at 3 P.M Tomato Acreage Cut For the second year in a row, Pennsylvania tomato growers are cutting their acreage for the processed food market by 12 per cent. The Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service says the an ticipated planting of just 6,900 acres is the lowest acreage since 1933 when just 6,200 acres of tomatoes were harvested for the canneries. This trend runs counter to the national crop which continues to show healthy growth in con secutive years. California, which already controls 65 per cent of the frozen and canned food market, will show a nine per cent jump in their tomato acreage in 1972. Scientists for huge corporate farming entities in the southwest vegetable belt have developed a strain of tomatoes which are particularly adaptable to mechanized harvesting. Canners and growers in the east still hand-pick their tomatoes, but are being economically squeezed out of the marketplace even though their product is thinner-skinned, jucier, and generally tastier.
