The prediction represents an 8 per cent rise over the estimated 1971 total of $27.8 billion and the largest per cent increase since the mid -19605. The increase will be the re sult of a record level of fed eral support, higher even than the previous peak figure of 1969, and from a continu ing upward trend in support from industry and private sources. Estimating corporate funded R&D by broad indus try groups, the forecast iden tifies the top spenders as: (1) transportation equipment and missiles, with 1972 R&D expenditures of $2.8 billion; (2) electrical equipment and communications, $2.7 billion; (3) machinery, $2 billion; and (4) chemical and allied products, $1.9 billion.
