Consumers Want to Know by MARGARET SPADER Director of Consumer Affairs National Association of Manufacturers I’d like to icplace an elect)ic. hotplate which I’ve used mam / yeais but have discovcied they a)en’t made any more. Why do manufacture) s dis continue useful items such as this ? Hot plates are still manu factured and are increasingly popular. Today they are called different names such as buffet range, portable electric range or table range. These are one burner and two-burner mod els; the single burners use 1000 to 1100 watts and some even offer variable tempera ture settings. On double burner models there is usu ally one burner using 500 watts, the other 1000 to 1100 watts. Look for these ranges in housewares departments, some electric utilities, hard ware stores, mail order catalogs, and trading stamp redeeming centers. Does a Jt-slice toaster requite special wiling to operate ef ficiently ? The wattage of a 4-shce toaster varies from 1500 to 1650 watts, which is consid erably more than a 2-slice model requires. In many homes the normal circuit will not accept more than 1660 watts. In such cases a 4-slice toaster should not be used on the same circuit with a re frigerator. The use and care book accom panying my refrigerator ad vises unplugging the cord from the electrical outlet when cleaning or changing a light bulb. Turning the con trol to “off" is easier—why isn’t it recommended ? Turning the control to “off” is easier but does not discon nect power to the appliance. For complete safety in clean ing any appliance powered by electricity it is best to unplug the cord from the outlet. TRY A CLASSIFIED ANDY APPLICATORS FOR ALL PLANTERS. See Us For Your Needs.
