Eshleman IM Dltfrlct-fmiuylvmta Ever since I came to Congress five years ago, the Vietnam issue has been foremost in my mind and the minds of nearly all Americans. It is the issue which has torn at the national conscience, has caused us to question even our most sacred beliefs, but, above all, has divided the Nation into bitterly opposed camps which have been so distrustful of one another that they have found it difficult to even talk to each other. During that period, I have supported two presidents as they have developed Vietnam policy. That support has not always been unqualified since I have believed from time to time that badly conceived policy was being pursued. D. 4, Lititz, Pa. Ph. 626-4355 Lancaster Farming. Saturday. February 12.1972 But, in general, I supported Presidents Johnson and Nixon because I felt that, rightly or wrongly, Congress had turned the authority for fighting the war over to the president and thereby had assumed a moral obligation to give him as much backing as possible In addition, I have believed that the very fact that the burden of the war was placed squarely on the president’s shoulders has meant that he has had the complete knowledge necessary to develop a responsible course of action in Southeast Asia. President Nixon has justified my support by pursuing a policy that has been both responsible in terms of our commitments to our Asian allies and responsible in terms of public sentiment m this country. And recently, the president revealed that privately as well as publicly he has been willing to go the extra mile in seeking a lasting peace in In dochina. The peace proposal that the president has offered our enemy places its stress on settling the problems that led to war and have kept the war going for far too long. It offers a peace that is fair to both sides in the conflict fair in military terms and in the all important political terms. The one thing that the president did not propose, but the thing that North Vietnam seems to want most, is for us to abandon not only the fight but our friends, too. Our enemy would have us believe, and some of the president’s critics seem to agree, that the road to peace is not through settlement, but through surrender. They want to continue the war until peace can be ob tained on their terms. What they want is something akin to our obtaining peace with Hitler in World War II by handing over Great Britian to him. The reason the president made known his eight point peace proposal was to try to get all of the American people to unify behind his policy Congress, in particular, should show that it is united behind the president’s objectives. It is tempting for some to make political points by continuing the divisions that have been a part of the Vietnam problem for so long. But it should be obvious by now that politics is not Hie way to peace. The way to peace has been charted by President Nixon, and I, for one, am proud of my sup port of his policy Ressler Heads Sequoia Riders The officers elected to serve the Sequoia Riders for the year 1972, are the following - President, Karen Ressler, vice president, Tracy Beyer; secretary, Tina Biesecker; treasurer, Brian Ressler; reporters, Carrie Hornafius and Debbie Dochterman.
