On Getting the 4-H Steer Ready for Farm Show
Editor’s Note: By this time
every year, all but the most
essential farm activities have
come to a stop on most local
farms. It's Farm Show time.
Everyone’s making last minute
preparations for this Show of
Shows. For most farmers and
farm youth, however, who have
serious interests in taking some
of the top awards, getting ready
for the Farm Show started many
months ago—possibly right after
last year’s show. This letter last
month by Max Smith, Lancaster
County ag agent, to 4-H beef
exhibitors at the Farm Show
indicates the care that must go
into serious Farm Show com
petition;
Dear 4-H Beef Exhibitor
This letter brings additional
information relating to the
showing of your 4-H Club steer at

steer be tied with a neck rope or
strap in addition to his halter
This will be needed to tie him out
at night and to tie him betwen two

Also, we are asking that each
member put a strip of masking
tape on the halter or neck strap
with your name on it This will
help with the correct iden

will furnish hay, straw, and gram
for inside the Farm Show
Building However, we will need
two bales of straw per steer, to be
used for the outside tie-out pens

your Club Leader or another club
member if you do not know how
to “block” your steer Use your
show halter on him daily so that
he will be used to it Train him to
stand squarely on his four feet at
all times
Many showmen train their
animals to eat and drink from the
feed bucket or tub before taking
him to the show You could get
him used to this change before
going to Harrisburg
Be on the alert for cattle lice at
this time of the year, excess
rubbing will remove the hair and
make him unsightly.
You have earned the honor of
representing our county in this
state-wide event, please work on
your steer and do your very best
at all times Please contact your
Club leader or myself if you have
