director for the Northeast region,
Battles said there are two kinds
of people in the world; those who
work and those who rest. He
explained that the system of self
determination adopted in this
country is based on working and
looking after yourself.
To keep the system working
well, he advised: be for
something, make things better
and not just be against the
establishment
Some of the key questions
facing us, he said, include; How
high should taxes be? Are we
going to have a cheap food
policy’ Which way should prices
and costs go’ What should be the
export and import policies’ Can
the individual live with pollution
regulations’ And is he going to be
part of the decisions made in
relation to pollution’ What should
be the policy on chemicals’
He warned that non-farm
persons increasingly are making
important decisions for the
farmer. “R’s almost imperative
that you belong to your farm
orgaization and make your voice
heard.”
He also said that “its tough to
be a good citizen today,” but
“you’ve got to make it your
number one goal to make the
system better.”
