Holds Annual Meeting The Lancaster County Far mers Association held its 19th annual meeting at the Harvest Drive Restaurant, Gordonville, last Friday evening The evening included election of directors, a speaker, passage of the local association’s recommendations on resolutions for the Pennsylvania Farmers Association and entertainment Seven directors were elected, including four who were reelected and three new direc tors The three new directors are - Robert H Kauffman, John Garber, and Aaron S Click. Directors reelected were William Guhl, Donald L Her shey, James L Martin and Ivan- Yost ' Speaker for the evening was Roy Battles, American Farm Bureau Federation information Discussing organization business at the Lancaster County Farmers Association annual meeting are: William Guhl, left, and Jim Shertzer, new membership chairman Pennfield No. 556 40% Concentrate . . . director for the Northeast region, Battles said there are two kinds of people in the world; those who work and those who rest. He explained that the system of self determination adopted in this country is based on working and looking after yourself. To keep the system working well, he advised: be for something, make things better and not just be against the establishment Some of the key questions facing us, he said, include; How high should taxes be? Are we going to have a cheap food policy’ Which way should prices and costs go’ What should be the export and import policies’ Can the individual live with pollution regulations’ And is he going to be part of the decisions made in relation to pollution’ What should be the policy on chemicals’ He warned that non-farm persons increasingly are making important decisions for the farmer. “R’s almost imperative that you belong to your farm orgaization and make your voice heard.” He also said that “its tough to be a good citizen today,” but “you’ve got to make it your number one goal to make the system better.” Members of the Milkmaids Trio, which will represent Lancaster County in the Pennsylvania Farmers Association talent contest, is shown entertaining at the Jim Shertzer, the new mem bership chairman, reported that the Lancaster County organization topped 1,000 members during the past year and said that if everyone pulls together the organization can be even better in the coming year. Mrs. Vivian Stauffer gave a women’s committee report. Eugene McDowell gave a report. James Kreider, president of Lancaster County Farmers Association annual banquet last week. He reported that the association was instrumental in helping to beat a proposal for a six per cent state sales tax on farm supplies. He noted that if adopted, this proposal could have resulted in several hundred dollars additional taxes for many farmers. (Continued on Page 15)
