Newcastle, a viral disease of poultry and other birds, is wide spread in Europe, South Ameri ca, Central America, Asia, and Africa. Animal health officials of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service say that the disease is not widespread in the United States. If the disease should reach epidemic status, the re sult could be as disastrous to the multibillion dollar US. poultry industry as it is proving to be in the countries now con fronted with this disease prob lem, they say. However, during the past few months the disease has been diagnosed in New York, Texas, New Mexico, and Florida In August 1970, all birds of South American origin in a New Yorx City pet shop died of a virulent strain of Newcastle disease not previously seen in the United States. Early in 1971 there were known outbreaks in Texas and New Mexico in layer flocks. Two flocks of diseased chickens in New Mexico are now under State quarantine and a Federal quarantine is under considera tion Several small flocks in Texas and New Mexico have had dis- ALLEN H. In Florida, all ornamental birds used for breeding studies by one scientist either died or were destroyed because of the disease. Officials say that the same virus was found in all out breaks. ARS officials remind poultry men that it is important to re evaluate their vaccination pro grams. Officials point out the licensed vaccines are effective when properly used. Poultrymen also are advised that additional steps can be taken to prevent Newcastle dis ease from infecting their flocks. These are: 1) excluding visi tors; 2) changing clothes and disinfecting footwear of all in dividuals moving from premise to premise; 3) obtaining re placement stock from reliable sources; 4) cleaning and disin fecting trucks or crates used to transport birds; 5) proper dis posal of dead birds; 6) cleaning and disinfecting feed sacks be fore reuse; 7) cleaning and sanitizing egg cases and liners before reuse; and 8) replace ment of contaminated litter.
