Corn Weed Control? i Accn* wwa LHooU Atrazine Tank Mix Combination REALLY DOES THE JOB! liiililililjiijililllil Smoketown, Pa. Pb. 397-3539 Com for Insects Stored Tests conducted by Harrison E. McGregor, entomologist of USDA’s Agricultural Research Service at Manhattan, Kansas, indicate that blighted corn is more attractive to certain stored product insects than is non blighted corn, and more favor able for their growth and de velopment. In the two types of tests run, rice weevils favored’ blighted corn to nonbhghted corn, and more than three times as many rice weevils and more than nine times as many red flour beetles developed in a single generation on bhghted corn than were pro duced on undamaged corn These results suggest that farmers and elevator operators with blight-damaged corn should (1) examine the stored corn more closely and frequently than normal for insect infestation, and (2) be prepared to use approved stored-gram insect control measures if the corn has not previously been treated If the corn is infested, it should he fumigated where pos sible. Applying malathion or synergized pyrethrins sprays to the surface of the corn will help prevent reinfestation and hold down surface infestation of moths, according to ARS scientists. If storage space is available, the com can be moved into bins that have been cleaned and sprayed. Apply a malathion spray to the corn as it is moved, to provide continuing protection against infestation. Further de tails on controlling stored-prod uct insects, in corn can be ob tained from local county exten sion agents. STOCKER & FEEDER SALE FINAL SALE: JUNE 11, 1971 - 7:00 P. M.
