82—Lancaster Farming, Saturday. March 14.1970 Pennsylvania Has Some Big Farm Operations The average Pennsylvania farmer is 51 years old. He oper ates a 142-acre farm But how about the unaverage farms in the Commonwealth? There .ire lots of them, accord ing to figures released recently by Leland H. Bull, Pennsylvania secretary of agriculture. Did you know that in Pennsyl vania, which is not famous for wheat production, there is a farm which has more than 500 acres planted in wheat? Or that there are 94 farms In the Keystone State with more than 100 acres m wheat? Even though. 142 acres con stitutes the average size farm in the state, some farms come mighty big. There are 44 farms with 2,000 or more acres. It will come as a shock to some who still regard Pennsyl vania as being only an indus trial state that there are 177 Pennsylvania farms valued at more than $500,000. There are 673 farms valued at between $200,000 and $500,000. Milk is the crop that makes the most money for Pennsyl vania’s fanners so an examina tion of dairy farm statistics is more than appropriate. There are 13 farms with 200 Or more cows and 175 farms with 100 or more cows. But there are more than 2,000 farms with 50 or more These larger dairy farms pro duce a large quantity of milk yet their production is a mere drop in the bucket compared With the 6,966 million pounds produced last year by the state’s estimated 22,000 dairy farm ers. Pennsylvania, which ranks fourth in the nation in egg production, has 18,000 farms Which sell eggs Twenty-three of these farms each sell 500,000 dozen or more eggs a year. Chickenwise, nearly 30,000 farms raise these fowl Sixty nine farms report having 20,000 or more chickens four months or older. One farm has more than 100,000 chickens in this age category. Beef cattle are becoming in creasingly important in the state. Fifteen years ago there were 147,000 steers in the Com monwealth. Today there are more than 246,000 One big cattle outfit in Ches ter County feeds 4,000 animals cAniem Im-t/lier Garden Center Rear 49 N. Broad St., Lititz 626-2343 The animals are brought to the on grass and grain prior to be farm in the spring and fattened ing sold. SAT., MAR. 28, 1970 AT 70:00 A. M.
