Why Didn’t Farmers
Grow Sugar Beets?
The prospects of any considei -
able sugar beets acreage being
planted in the soon coming
growing season has nearly fizzl
ed, it was learned from leading
Lancaster County farmers this
week The reasons varied from
one situation to another, but
most of the farmers contacted
who had originally shown mtei
est in raising beets agreed there
just wasn’t enough profit ex
pected to compete with present
county crops or to justify thfe
cost of equipment investment
Willis Kilheffer, Manheim Rl,
had grown a test plot of sugai
beets several yeais ago and
would still like to see beets
grown in the county But he was
hoping for a base guarantee
such as the broiler raisers re

wise use of our natural re
sources throughout the nation
Through the use of illustrated
presentations, tours and lectures
he has been effective in ac
quainting urban residents with
the increasing need for all
g'-oups to accept the challenge
of improving the environment
for this and future generations
“Mr. Hackman is widely re
spected for his devotion to pro

sources which have made this
nation great As a farmer,
teacher and conservationist, he
has championed the cause of
conservation, for which we
Pennsylvanians are grateful.
