High Mochinery Costs Increase Custom Work One of the greatest expenses of modern farming is the most of owning and operating farm machinery, reports W. T Mc- Allister, extension economist at the University of Delaware Increasing costs of new ma chinery combined with low an nual use for many machines is causing many farmers to exa mine the possibility of leasing specialized machmeiy or having work done by custom operators. Machmeiy costs may be clas sified as either ownership or operating costs, explains McAl lister. Ownership costs include depreciation, taxes, housing, in surance, interest on investment those costs incurred regard less of the extent of use. Operat ing costs include fuel, grease and oil. Repair costs have both owner ship and operating cost charac teristics depending on circum stance. If repair costs are in cluded as a percentage of new machine cost, ownership costs will usually be from 15 to 20 percent of initial machine costs each year. To estimate machine costs, calculate ownership costs 15 to 20 percent of new machine cost; then estimate operating costs per acre gas, oil and grease and multiply by total acreage on which the machine will be used. Ownership costs plus operat ing costs result in total machine cost for the year. Compare this cost to leasing or custom costs. Don’t forget to include the cost of your own labor when comparing machinery and cus tom costs, cautions McAllister. Labor costs are usually included m the custom rate. It is also advisable to weigh machinery costs against possi ble crop losses due to untimely custom work, he concludes. Do you suppose TV stations will ever give equal time to anti fag blurbs?
