pected to be arouna 325 million
pounds. Although approximate
ly 23 million pounds are destin
ed to fill USDA contracts for the
needy peisons feeding program,
the 300 million remaining rep
resent a heavy carry-over.
U S farm turkey prices dur
ing the first half of 1969 are ex
pected to be Ito 15 cents above
the low prices of the same pe
riod of 1968 Slaughter during
this period may be off 10%, but
farm prices will be held down to
about 20 5 cents, as storage
stocks are reduced.
The 1969 tuikev crop is ex
pected to be around 5% larger
than in 1968 However, a great
deal of uncertainty exists con
cerning grower plans because
movement into consumption
during the major marketing sea
son of 1968 has been slower and
at a lower puce than expected.
US farm turkey prices dur
ing the 1969 main marketing
season, August-November, will
likely be the same or slightly
lower than the 20 8 cent average
of the same period of 1968.
Strength of demand will be
about the same. Consumer pur
chasing power will be stronger
but will be offset by expected
heavier supplies of broilers and
red meat.
Feed costs during the main
feeding period will be slightly
higher than during the same pe
riod of 1968.
EGGS
U.S. farm egg prices in 1969
are expected to average about
the same as during the preced
ing calendar year, but with a
sharply different price pattern
In 1969 egg prices will be de
clining while in 1968 they were
rising.
Feed prices for 1969 will av
eiage slightly higher than in
1968. Net incomes of egg pro
ducers in 1969 are expected to
be the same to slightly lower
than a year earlier.
Egg prices in the first quar
ter of 1969 are expected to av
erage 36 cents a dozen, about 5
cents more than the first quarter
of 1968 In the second quarter,
these prices will likely average
32-33 cents, about 4 cents above
the same quarter of 1968.
In the third quarter prices are
expected to average 33 cents, 3
to 4 cents a dozen under a year
earlier. In the last quarter of
1969 these prices will likely be
33 cents, 5 to 6 cents a dozen
under the same months of the
previous year The highest egg
prices of 1969 are expected in
January and the lowest in De
cember. „ ,
The US. laying flock will
pvobably start 1969 about 10
million birds below a year earli
er, but will go ahead of 1968
levels during the third quarter.
The January-June 1969 rate of
lav may average slightly below
the first half of 1968. In the last
half of 1969, the rate of lay will
be above year earlier levels.
The egg-type chick hatch in
the first half of 1969 is expected
to be about 15% above the same
period of the preceding year
The hatch in the last half will
likely be little changed from the
same months in 1968. A 1969
hatch of the expected magnitude
will result in drastically lower
Individual producers may re
ceive prices lower than the U S
average faim price upon which
this report is based. The U S
price includes prices received
by producers who sell to hatch
eries and those who market di
rect to consumers or to retail
stores.
BROILERS
Fiist half 1969 nine-city aver
age broiler prices are expected
to average 26-26 5 cents—about
one cent below year earlier
Third quarter prices will likely
average 25.5-26 cents about
three cents under year earlier.
Fourth quarter prices may aver
age 23 5-24 5 cents about two
cents below 1968.
