Resoni'ch directors from the
Universities of Maryland and
Delawaie reported progress in
nearly 50 research projects in
volving broilers, when univer
sity men met with Delmarva
poultrymen recently in Easton
The meeting was called at
the suggestion of Mr. Tom
Whittington, president of Del
marva Poultry Industry, Inc
(DPI) and arrangements were
made by Mr. Frank Gordy,
DPI secretary.
From the University of Dela
ware, Dr W J. Benton, head of
the Animal Science Depart
ment, reported that one of their
most exciting experiments was
ai,med at finding wavs to sepa
rate broilers from their litter.
At present they are raising the
birds in cages, but “we believe
there may be better methods,
and we are looking at some of
them” he said -He leported on

He outlined a detailed studv
of Maryland agriculture now
underway at the University.
The studv will consider the
present status, problems and po

next year, it will provide the
basis for a ten year plan for
agriculture at the University,”
he said.
Dr I. C. Ilaut, director of the
University of Maryland Agricul

potted that 34 projects in “poul
try and poultry science” are cur

try industry representatives for
the fine cooperation they are
extending to the institution
“We are having more coopera

sharing of ideas.”
To identify «nme of the r*™-

publications reporting on pout

try experiments have been pro
duced by the University since
the 1963 annual report of the
Experiment Station.
Dr. Clyne Shaffner, head of
the University’s Poultry Science
Deoartment, reported that: In
addition to a large number of
nutrition studies, researchers in
his department arc working on
breeding lines of poultry that
mav be resistant to one*or sev
eral diseases plaguing the in
dustry: chickens that will use
proteins more efficiently; hand
ling methods to prevent bruis
ing on dressed broilers; process
ing methods to protect dresse'd
poultry quality, and many other
investigations on management,
breeding and feeding.
Dr. R L. Green, head of the
AgncuHural Engineering De

University’s new Experimental

Experiments on new varieties
of sovbcans and other studies
involving the production of feed

progressing well, according to
a report by Dr. James Miller,
head of the University’s Agro

A simulated broiler program
(computerized) has been de

Department of Agricultural
Economics, said Dr. John Cur

formation gathered from this
study should lead to more or
derly production and market
ing of broilers on the Delmarva
peninsula.
Poultry industry representa
tives suggested several possible
fields where they felt university
research would be beneficial.
Dr. Donald Davis of Caroline
Farms said he believes the time
has come to offer indemnities,
if necessary, to eradicate laring
