—Lancaster Fanning. Saturday. November 9,1968 16 Universities On Poultry Resoni'ch directors from the Universities of Maryland and Delawaie reported progress in nearly 50 research projects in volving broilers, when univer sity men met with Delmarva poultrymen recently in Easton The meeting was called at the suggestion of Mr. Tom Whittington, president of Del marva Poultry Industry, Inc (DPI) and arrangements were made by Mr. Frank Gordy, DPI secretary. From the University of Dela ware, Dr W J. Benton, head of the Animal Science Depart ment, reported that one of their most exciting experiments was ai,med at finding wavs to sepa rate broilers from their litter. At present they are raising the birds in cages, but “we believe there may be better methods, and we are looking at some of them” he said -He leported on 12 protects that are underway or in the planning .stage Delaware’s Dean of Agricul ture, William McDaniel said he believes that univeisity re search must change to keep pace with the times as poultry. production changes from the I 160 acre fai m producers to the j “Rockefeller-Standaid Oil type of operation ” Dr Frank Bentz, vice presi dent for agricultural affairs at the University of Maryland gave an overview of agriculture at the University He called attention to the $92.% million that the broiler industry contributes' to the state’s economy each vear “This is about 28 pei cent of the total cash faun receipts and is a size- FREE analysis of your home oifr beating equipment. He outlined a detailed studv of Maryland agriculture now underway at the University. The studv will consider the present status, problems and po tentials of all phases of the in dustry “When completed early next year, it will provide the basis for a ten year plan for agriculture at the University,” he said. Dr I. C. Ilaut, director of the University of Maryland Agricul tural Experiment Station, re potted that 34 projects in “poul try and poultry science” are cur rently underway at the Univer sity He congratulated the poul try industry representatives for the fine cooperation they are extending to the institution “We are having more coopera tion than ever before more sharing of ideas.” To identify «nme of the r*™- gress, he pointed out that 55 publications reporting on pout Co. try experiments have been pro duced by the University since the 1963 annual report of the Experiment Station. Dr. Clyne Shaffner, head of the University’s Poultry Science Deoartment, reported that: In addition to a large number of nutrition studies, researchers in his department arc working on breeding lines of poultry that mav be resistant to one*or sev eral diseases plaguing the in dustry: chickens that will use proteins more efficiently; hand ling methods to prevent bruis ing on dressed broilers; process ing methods to protect dresse'd poultry quality, and many other investigations on management, breeding and feeding. Dr. R L. Green, head of the AgncuHural Engineering De partment. reported on the ini t'al studies under way at the University’s new Experimental b’oiler facility at the Salisbury substation He said the work (here is in initial stages, but the facilities promise some excel- It takes new ideas in hybrids to make the most of intensified corn growing practices. Experiments on new varieties of sovbcans and other studies involving the production of feed grains on the Eastern Shore are progressing well, according to a report by Dr. James Miller, head of the University’s Agro nomy Department. A simulated broiler program (computerized) has been de veloped by researchers in the Department of Agricultural Economics, said Dr. John Cur tis head of the department. In formation gathered from this study should lead to more or derly production and market ing of broilers on the Delmarva peninsula. Poultry industry representa tives suggested several possible fields where they felt university research would be beneficial. Dr. Donald Davis of Caroline Farms said he believes the time has come to offer indemnities, if necessary, to eradicate laring otracheitis (a serious economic disease in broilers). Harry Palmer of Otis Feeds suggested that more work should be done on developing new poultry products such as a “pre-cooked poultry roll.” Both industry representatives and university officials express ed a desire to get together again perhaps on a twice yearly basis to discuss mutual prob lems. “America” The coastal regions of what are now Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay first bore the name “America.” The name gradually came into use for all of South America and was later given to both continents. * * Scientists have described about 350,000 'different species of in sects.
