Several states have passed legislation requiring or per
mitting the use of the “Slow Moving Vehicle Emblem”
(SMV) to protect motorists from rear-end collisions with
slow vehicles on streets and highways. The triangular em
blem, 16 inches wide and 14 inches high, combines a yellow
orange fluorescent center and a border of red reflective
sheeting. The fluorescent center “glows” vividly in day
light. The reflective border “bounces” light back to
oncoming cars at night. The SMV was developed after
three years of research at Ohio State University on a
grant from the Automotive Safety Foundation. It is design
ed to be placed on the rear of all vehicles that regularly
operate at speeds of 25 miles per hour or less.

Soil Erosion Problems
Covered In New SCS
Ag Publication
For years soil erosion has been
considered a menace to the wel
fare of the nation with emphasis
on the damage to farmland.
What has, perhaps, been over
looked by many is the damage
eroded soil docs, to everyone,
everywhere. As we clean our
drinking water, as we dredge our
harbors, as we watch our reser
voirs diminish in their capacity,
we are reminded of this prob
lem.
You can read more about this
in a new publication of the Soil
Conservation Service, U.S. De
partment of Agriculture, called
"Sediment It’s Filling Har
bors, Lakes and Roadside Ditch
es.” Ask your local Soil Conser
vation Service representative for
a copy. He is Orval A. Bass,
Work Unit Conservationist lo
cated at the Farm & Home Cen
ter, 1383 Arcadia Rd., Lancaster.
The publication points out
that more than a half billion cu
bic yards of eroded soil is
dredged each year from streams,
navigation channels, estuaries
