A Brief Crop Summary Production of Pennsylvania seedleaf tobacco is currently forecast at 36 million pounds, and may possibly be the small est crop in 30 years A survey by the State Crop Reporting Service indicates an estimated yield per acre of 1,800 pounds, 50 pounds less than last year and 25 pounds below the five year average Acreage also continues to de cline and is now estimated at 20,000 acres, down 1,000 from 1967 and the lowest since 1934 Pennsylvania’s 1968 potato production is expected to total 8,550,000 hundredweight. If the forecast materializes, the crop may be the third high est since 1955 but a far cry from the 12 to 18 million hundredweight that were com monplace for the Keystone State for the first 50 years of this century Acreage for 1968 is estimated at 38,000 acres, the same as last year However, the expected yield is 225 cwt pei acre com pared to a record 240 in 1967 when the crop totaled 9,120,000 cwt.
