National Fall
Potato Outlook
Not As Good
Prospects for fall pototoes
potatoes declined during the
month as hot weather general
ly prevailed in the Pacific
Northwest and dry weather
continued in the Red River
Valley. Prospects in all fall re
gions declined during the
month 2.3 million in the 8
eastern States. 1.0 million in
the central and 2.6 million in
the western States. Harvest has
started in many areas and the
rate is expected to increase
rapidly in Septemlber, when
more areas start digging.
In Maine, where the crop is
late, the set was below earlier
expectations. Vine killing was
expected to be general by ear
ly September. Prospects on
Long Island are below earlier
expectations because of poor
sizing. Ample rainfall was re
ceived in Michigan during Au
gust. In Wisconsin, prospects
are generally good Dry weath
er continued into August in
the Red River Valley of Min
nesota and North Dakota and
prospects declined from Au
gust 1 because sizing was ma
terially affected. High tempera
tures in southwestern and
south central iowa during Au
gust did not favor growth. In
the eastern areas of Idaho, a
good crop is in prospect. The
prospects for the State, at 619
million, are much below the

Valley of Colorado, some acre

ly in Washington, were down
because of the high tempera
tures in August. .Sizes in Wash
ington are expected to average
below last year. The crop in
Californio, on the other hand,
continues to grow well in all
areas. Prospects for the late
summer crop, at 30,430,000
cwt. on September 1, are
slightly below the 31,114,000
cwt. forecast a month ago, but
above the 29,430,000 cwt. har
vested in 1966. Digging was
underway in all areas and be
cause of the late growing sea
son, was running generally la
ter than usual. Harvest on
Long Island has been slow and
about 8 percent of the crop
was dug to Septemlber 1 com
pared with 10 percent a year
ago and 17 percent in 1965.
Yields on early Harvested ac
reage were disappointing. In
New Jersey, excessive rainfall
and limited demand has de
layed harvest. In the Bay area
