o—Lancaster Farming, Saturda; I National Fall Potato Outlook Not As Good Prospects for fall pototoes potatoes declined during the month as hot weather general ly prevailed in the Pacific Northwest and dry weather continued in the Red River Valley. Prospects in all fall re gions declined during the month 2.3 million in the 8 eastern States. 1.0 million in the central and 2.6 million in the western States. Harvest has started in many areas and the rate is expected to increase rapidly in Septemlber, when more areas start digging. In Maine, where the crop is late, the set was below earlier expectations. Vine killing was expected to be general by ear ly September. Prospects on Long Island are below earlier expectations because of poor sizing. Ample rainfall was re ceived in Michigan during Au gust. In Wisconsin, prospects are generally good Dry weath er continued into August in the Red River Valley of Min nesota and North Dakota and prospects declined from Au gust 1 because sizing was ma terially affected. High tempera tures in southwestern and south central iowa during Au gust did not favor growth. In the eastern areas of Idaho, a good crop is in prospect. The prospects for the State, at 619 million, are much below the 70 2 in 1966 In the San Luis Valley of Colorado, some acre age was hail-damaged in Au gust, but total damage was small Growing conditions oth erwise have been good.
