Farm Magazines, Preferred Source
Of Information, Study Shows
Pennsylvania farmers devote
most of their reading time to
newspapers and farm maga
zines, a survey of dairy farm
ers in Indiana, Susquehanna,
and Wyoming counties indi
cates.
The survey shows that over
90 percent of the farmers in
terviewed in Susquehanna and
Wyoming counties receive a
weekly newspaper, according
to Emory J. Brown, professor
of rural sociology and agricul
tural extension, who supervis
ed the survey.
The average number of farm
magazines received per family
averaged five in all three coun
ties, Brown says Relatively
few farmers subscribe to the
higher priced magazines or re
ceive publications dealing with
specialized fields But he finds
the number of farmers read-
ing such magazines is increas

As for magazine re ading
habits, most farmers respond
ed, “I scan the magazine and
if an aiticle hits my eye. I’ll
read it” Biown says the aver

survey of reading habits among
dairy farmers in Wisconsin.
The pioportion of farmers
in the sample receiving a daily
newspaper was 48 percent in
Susquehanna County, 66 per
cent in Wyoming County, and
95 percent in Indiana County.
Brown described the findings
in the summer issue of “Sci

quarterly magazine of the Ag

about farming. This preference
is due to the easy access of
