Saturday, August 5,1967 Farm Magazines, Preferred Source Of Information, Study Shows Pennsylvania farmers devote most of their reading time to newspapers and farm maga zines, a survey of dairy farm ers in Indiana, Susquehanna, and Wyoming counties indi cates. The survey shows that over 90 percent of the farmers in terviewed in Susquehanna and Wyoming counties receive a weekly newspaper, according to Emory J. Brown, professor of rural sociology and agricul tural extension, who supervis ed the survey. The average number of farm magazines received per family averaged five in all three coun ties, Brown says Relatively few farmers subscribe to the higher priced magazines or re ceive publications dealing with specialized fields But he finds the number of farmers read- ing such magazines is increas ing As for magazine re ading habits, most farmers respond ed, “I scan the magazine and if an aiticle hits my eye. The pioportion of farmers in the sample receiving a daily newspaper was 48 percent in Susquehanna County, 66 per cent in Wyoming County, and 95 percent in Indiana County. Brown described the findings in the summer issue of “Sci ence for the Farmer,” the quarterly magazine of the Ag ricultural Experiment Station at Penn State. He claims farm ers prefer magazines and news papers more than group meet ings or personal visits as meth ods of getting information about farming.
