JT8 —Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, November 5,1966 |» Net Energy (Continued from Page 13) gfoslted in the body as meat and fait; and how much is fi nally available for milk pro duction. He found that 'two feeds equal in TDN might differ in the proportion of nutritive val ue going to productive use. A fanner would obviously pre fer a feed with more milk making power to one resulting in more urine or gases. Flaftt calls this milk-making power the net energy (NE) of « feed. For beef cattle, NE can also express a feed’s po tential for meat production. A dairy farmer, for example, Blight want to calculate the energy produced by a feed when replacing part of 'the concentrates in a ration witn forage, Since NE is more accurate fftscn TI>N the farmer, by us ing NE for his energy calcu lating, would be more sure of maintaining high milk produc tion. Determining the NE of a feed under Flatit’s system of sealing a cow inside a cham fcea* requires much time and Jahor even with computerized equipment. Van Soest devel oped his new method to sim pSfy this process. One of the traditional sys tems which Van Soest’s meth od may replace, the 100-year old Weende system, attempts to imitate an animal’s diges tive processes by chemistry. It yields two fractions called “imtrogen-free extract” (NFE) and “crude fiber” (CF). NFE is relatively digestible, CUT FUEL BILLS uptoso%! SUPER FLOOR L H. The Weende system is in accurate, however, because NFE contains some feed com ponents such as lignin which cattle cannot digest; and CF includes some fibers such ns cellulose which cattle digest easily. Instead of trying to duplicate natural digestion, Van Soest based his system on the struc tures of the plants he analyzes. He found that the cell con tents of a plant are almost completely digested by all live stock, and that ruminants also digest cell walls to some ex tent. Van Soest determines, sep arately, the feed value of cell contents and of cell walls, which he calls “neutral deter gent fiber” (NDF). To find the value of NDF, he determines the total value of the cell wall fibers cellulose and lignin, which he calls “acid detergent fiber” (ADF). Then, he determines the pro- Keep Good Things Happening _ • • • that’s strong integrity .... in dynamic leadership for Pennsylvania. in ' Superbly qualified . . . Raymond P.
