Zerby, Student Teacher Twenty-five Young Farmers, their advisor Gene Daugherty and two student teachers, Ro bert Elmer and Clair Zerby recently toured the New Bol ton Center at Kennett Square. The group was met by Dr. C. J Hollister, the administra tor of the Center, who briefly gave a histoiy of the Center and the facilities. The Center is a part of the School of Vetei inary Medicine of the University of Pennsylvania. It is maintained for teaching, research, and services to the public. Approximately three hundred and fifty acres are owned by the university and an additional two bundled and seventy acres are rented, giv ing a total of six hundred twenty acres. A recent ly acquired herd of one hun dred and fifty head of regis tered, purebred Jerseys is be ing used for leucosis research. Leucosis in poultry and live stock is closely i elated to leukemia in humans. A small flock of sheep, a small herd of swine, and a few horses are kept for research purposes. With one exception, the facili ties are financed by private endowment and not by state appropriations. The exception is the Poultry Diagnositc La boratory, which is state sup ported. The group was very interest ed in the operating rooms, the X-Ray room and facilities, and a room to be completed for Electro-cardiogram of the hearts of livestock for heart disease. The hardware was lo cated near the heart and the incision was made in the side, near the location of the heart. The trip was very educa tional and enjoyed by all. Most of the men on the tour have a better understanding of the training, research, and facili ties made available to the stu dents in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Penn sylvania. The farmers in the state of Pennsylvania and the eastern part of the United States send many animals to the center for special treat ment and/or study. This can and is to be arranged for through your local veterinarian. A minimum charge is made for room and board, plus the medi cines used. County SCS Staff Euben Keesee of Nashville, Tenn., has recently been hired ns a Soil Conservationist by the U.S. Soil /Conservation Service' for Lancaster. County. Euben graduated as an Agron omist from Tennessee Agri cultural and Industrial State University and worked as a Eesearch Technician in plant Sciences for the University for the past 13 years. His work with the SOS will be primarily helping farmers and other landowners to de velop complete conservation plans for their land.
