14—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 26, 1964 • Nitrate (Continued from Page 1) stage of maturity when pro duction of grain will not re sult or will be considerably curtailed even though ade quate moisture falls later. The possible consequence is high nitrate content in corn plants. Sudan grass, and sorghum sudan crosses were also ac cumulating nitrate when tests were made in July. Some al falfa, cut the first week in July, contained nitrate. Smith offers the following suggestions to those who in tend to use drouth-damaged feed. Leave in the field as long as practical. Nitrate will di minish as plants mature. Have laboratory tests made of silage or hay to determine the nitrate level. Ground corn can be added to silage. This added carbohy drate will reduce the propor tionate amount of nitiate con sumed by animals Feed high energy materials with forage containing nitrate. Have water tested. Perhaps alternate water supplies are available with a low nitrate content. Water high in nitrate, when used with high nitrate feed, could compound live stock problems. Finally, says Smith, many of the recent claims of connec tion between increased ferti lized use and high nitrate con tent in forages and water do not agree with scientific ob servations. The dangers of high nitrate content in feed were recog nized many years before ni trogen fertilizer was extensive ly used, Smith notes. It was, and is, known as oat hay or corn stalk poisoning which usually not always oc curs in very dry years on the most fertile soils. High nitrogen fertilizer use excesses over that recom mended following soil tests can make for more frequent occurrence of nitrate poison ing However, he adds, ni trates come from legume res idues and farm manures, too, and should be taken into con sideration. • Lancaster (Continued 'from Page 2) HOGS: 1250. Some grow up to be a sure source of steady, ex tra income as well. It all depends upon, how you feed them. The Pioneer Feeding Program can make the profitable difference. The capacity to handle maximum feed and produce more milk is determined early_ in your cows’ lives, during the calf and heifer stage. Thus, a fruitful feeding program must be designed to meet all the nutritional requirements of growing cattle and to insure efficient production when they join the milking herd.
