In Penna. Milk
Is Lowered
HARRISBURG The level
of radioactive material in milk
from Pennsylvania farms was
lower in January than in Dec
ember, the state health depart
ment reported Wednesday.
According to department
statistics, the level of Stron
tium-flO, the radioactive ele
ment, was 15.5 picocuries per
liter for January compared
with 16.7 for December.
Hie danger level for Stron
tium-60 in milk ranges in the
hundreds of picocuries per lit
er.
PREFIX NAME
Ivan Z. Martin, Lititz, will

all Registered Holstein animals
bred in that herd from now
on. Use of this prefix name
has been granted by The Hol
stein-Friesian Association of
America. It becomes a perman
ent part of official breed re
cords at that organization’s na
tional headquarters in Brattle
boro, Vermont.

Research figures showed, he
said, that income over feed cost
was higher when a combina
tion of corn silage, grass silage
and hay, was used than when
any of the three was used as
the only forage.
Dr E M. Kesler, also of ths
dairy department of the Uni
versity, citing other experi
ments, said, “On the basis of
research, we can not recom
mend going higher than two
pounds of grain to one pound
of hay for dairy cows.”
He said every cow on the
excessive gram ration m the
experiment had digestive or
udder troubles.
Dr. Adams, in speaking
about commercial veal produc
tion, said “Disease is the big
problem, and there is no good
way of controlling disease.”
He said experiments have
shown that veal calves can
make a return of more than
$2O per head when produced on
an acceptable milk replacer.
This compared with an average
loss of more than a dollar a
head for calves on whole milk
