18—Lancaster Farming, March 21, 1964 Pea Growers Plan Increase HARRISBURG Pennsyl vania vegetable processors have indicated a 16 per cent in crease in acreage of peas to be planted for processing, ac cording to the Pennsylvania Crop Reporting Service. The March 1 estimate of 9.600 acres for 1963 and 13,- 5.600 acres for 1963 and 5,240 for the 1958-62 average. The acreage intended for freezing is 3,900, up 600 acres from last year. March 1 tomato planting intentions (for processing) show a 2 per cent increase over 1963 hut a 32 per cent drop from the 1958-62 average of 14,360 acres. The estimated 9,800 acres compared with 9,*00 acres for 1963 and 13,- 600 for 1962. Pennsylvania asparagus growers expect to harvest 850 acres in 1964, or 50 acres less than last year, the TPCRS esti mated. The acreage includes all fresh market production plus a small amount usually delivered to processors.
