14 Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April I, 1961-j State Forest Sales Increase Harrisburg Forests and Waters K. <<3oodard reported today that the state has earned oversl million more from the sale ■of State Forest timber in the last six years than in the previous twenty. “Income from timber sales since 1955, when a scientific management plan was placed in effect has brought $2,574,- 753 into the state’s General Fund compared with only 51,426,510 earned from 1935 through 1954,” he stated, “proof that harvesting tim ber on a sustained yield management basis earns div idends” He predicted that earnings will be at least doubled in the next few years Goddard added that 1960 income from timber sales was the highest in the de partment’s history $603,- 268 largely attributed to high prices for cherry in the jurniture industry. He said that a total of 17,771,453 board feet of saw timber and 10,430 cords of pulpwood were sold from State Forests last year. He added that these volumes can be in -creased through the, efforts of additional foresters uho he hopes to put to work soon marking timber. He pointed out. however, that sales are controlled by market condi tions, commenting- “There was no noticeable improvement in the railroad tie market this year and none as expected in the forseeable future. Pulpwood market has 'declined somewhat but it has always fluctuated con siderably.
