Milk Program
Use Is Up Sixth Straight Year
-For the sixth straight year,
the U S. Department of Ag
riculture reports an increase
in the amount of mi Ik being
consumed by children thru
the operation of the Special
Milk Program.
According to USDA’s Ag
ricultural Marketing Service
in the fiscal year which end
ed June 30, 1960, nearly 2 4
billion half-pints of milk
were moved into use by tire
program, in addition to milk
served with lunches under
the National School Lunch
Program, This 2.4 billion
total represents an increase
of about 200 million half
pints over the preceding
year. Preliminary reports in
dicate that the amount of
milk used by the program
will be even greater this
year.
The Special Milk Program
encourages children to drink
more milk by making it pos
sible for schools and institu
tions to serve it more fre
quently and at reduced pric
es, or to inaugurate a milk
service. During 1960 the
