Department of Ag riculture reports an increase in the amount of mi Ik being consumed by children thru the operation of the Special Milk Program. According to USDA’s Ag ricultural Marketing Service in the fiscal year which end ed June 30, 1960, nearly 2 4 billion half-pints of milk were moved into use by tire program, in addition to milk served with lunches under the National School Lunch Program, This 2.4 billion total represents an increase of about 200 million half pints over the preceding year. Preliminary reports in dicate that the amount of milk used by the program will be even greater this year. The Special Milk Program encourages children to drink more milk by making it pos sible for schools and institu tions to serve it more fre quently and at reduced pric es, or to inaugurate a milk service.
