Agent The month of August is Ihe best time to make sum mer scodmgs ot alfalfa and led clover, m southeastern Pennsylvania one of the most popular times to make new sccdmgs of alfalfa is mid- August; tne dates are from Aug 10 to the 20th Stand* of red, alsike, and ladmo clover may be seeded sue ccssfully during the last ten days oi August With the mid-August seed ing of alfalfa there are sev eral important practices that should be followed for a successful stand, local pro ducers are urged to keep the following points in mind Prepare a good seedbed by plowing the field several in advance of the seeding, or disc several times over a month’s period pre ceding the seeding operation, tins will get a firm, fine seed bed that should be free of weeds It is very important that the seedbed be solid rather than loose Uce adequate lime and fer tilizer accoiding to a com plete soil test, this is very jmporlant for all- legumes es pecially alfalfa It is practic ally wasting seed and labor to attempt an alfalfa seeding in sour soil. The phosphorus and potash should be worked deeply into the soil before the seeding operation; this is a much better time than to broadcast it on tap later At seeding time it is strongly recommended to use 300 to 500 pounds of a complete fer tilizer (5-10-10) in older to supply plant food quickly for the new plants. Use adapted varieties in oi'der to obtain maximum yields of a high quality for age Thoio arc several that will do good m - Lancaster County and some of the most popular ones are Buffalo, Vernal, and Du Puits.
