The boys will cook out and sleep in a tent in state parks along the route. —LF PHOTO County Future Farmers On Six Weeks Tour Ten Future Farmers and their chaperone left Lanc aster County this week on the first leg of a jaunt sche duled to take them some 12,000 miles through the western United States, Cana da and Mexico. The trip is the reward for the success, of a group farm ing project carried on as part of their FFA program last year. All the boys' are recent graduates in the vocational Agriculture course at Man hehn, Central High School. During their last year in school, the boys carried on a farming program which in cluded an acre of wheat, two acres of com and seven acres of tobacco. All work on-the crops was done on a schedule prepared by a com mittee. None of it was done during school hours. Using the proceeds from the crops to finance the trip was all the incentive the boys needed to do a good job on the project, according to Joseph H. McGahen, tea cher of vocational agricul ture. Heading west in a pickup truck outfitted with seats in the body the boys built in the school shop, the group plans to cook their own mea ls and sleep in a tent In the state parks along the way. Plans revealed at depart ure from Manheim on Mon day show that the modem pioneers plan to be in Jau ree, Mexico tomorrow, Sun day, to attend a bull fight. No fly-by-night trip this. The boys have planned mail stops along the route where parents and friends can rea ch them with mail once a week. P.'-rents will bo kept informed of the progress be ing made by the travelers by phone as well The boys will have a rotating sche dule for calls home, alter which the parents will no tify each other. Traveling west to the coa st in California by a south ern route, the boys will visit points of agricultural inter est along the way returning to Lancaster by a northern route in August. Accompanying the farm boys on the trip this year will be 'Mr Stanley Bross man, mathematics teacher in the Manheira Control high school.
