Secures Most
Migrant Labor
The Farm Placement Bur
eau of the Department of La
bor and Industry represented
the farmers of Pennsylvania
in contracting for more than
three-fourths of all the mi
giant workers from southern
slates needed to harvest crops
in the state this year
Announcement was made
to a meeting of the Govern
or’s Committee on Migratory
Farm Labor by Alvan Frank,
Siate Farm • Placement Su
pervisor, it was reported by
Secretary of Labor and In
dustry William L Batt, Jr.,
chairman of the Governor’s
Committee
Seventy-seven crews were
lined up for Pennsylvania
farmers by the Department’s
representatives in Florida
last April as they toured the
Flouda State Employment
Centers with representatives
Oi the Farm Placement Bur
eaus of other states
The crew leaders contract
ed to bring more than 3,100
southern workers ,into the
State between June 15 and
late October. This compares
with sixty crews and 2,900
workers in 1959.
In addition to the crews
contracted by the Farm
Placement Bureau another
twenty or twenty-five crews
will be hired by Pennsylvan
ia farmers without using the
machinery set up by the
State.
The remainder of the
State’s seasonal farm labor
force, totalling about 30,000
will be drawn from the local
Pennsylvania labor markets.

miles from N. J. Turnpike

Prices have dropped sharp
ly for eastern grown round
type potatoes. A very late
spring in many areas has
resulted .in an overlapping
potato harvest and an unus
ually heavy build up of sup
plies.
Home grown cherries will
appear as a highlight on
many fruit counters this
week end. The peak of the
sweet cherry harvest will
come this week in Southcen
tral Pennsylvania.
Banana prices have drop
ped at the wholesale level.
Watermelons are much
lower in price -as supplies
from Florida promise to de
luge the market in the next
week to ten days. Quality
is excellent. Liberal supplies
of cantaloupes are arriving
from the western growing
areas; prices are about as
low as can be expected con
sidering the shipping distan
ce and cost of transportat
ion.
