January 23, i 960—9 Sorghum Variety 1$ Declared Noxious Weed By Agronomists Harrisburg The Penn sylvania Department of Ag riculture warned farmers to day that a variety of Sorg hum being offered for sale for use as a pasture grass or silage is classified as a nox ious weed under state law. Dr Thomas L. Guyton, di rector of the Bureau of Plant Industry, says that the seed being offered is Sorghum Almum Because of its simil arity to Johnson grass, it is banned m Pennsylvania “Salesmen are going from door-to-door selling this seed,” Dr Guyton said. “They are claiming that this grass will make two to three cuttings of silage a >ear. Johnson grass spreads by sending out underground runners as well as by seed. There is no known effective herbicide winch will con trol Johnson grass. In the restrictions against Johnson grass, provisions are made that ‘ crosses with oth er grasses, ahd“many other grasses which produce seed which are not readily dislin guished from Johnson grass” are classified as noxious weeds.
