Sloat warned toma to growers this week that some- early or Alternana bl ight is piesent on some toma to plants in most fields In add + in, he said, pink potato aphids and green p°a aphids are rather heavy in many fields, and rapidly in creasing in number. Corn borer moths are emerging at this t me and flea beetles al so are active in tomato fields. Sloat recommends applica tion of first spray at once, w th repeat spraying at eight to ten day intervals, dusting at five-day periods Spray matena’s include two lbs of Zerlate, Ziram or Maneb; three lbs of 50% Mef hoxychlor and two lbs 25% Malath'on WP. Zeriate gives best control of early b l ight, aids in set ting of fruit and early ripen ing Malathion is for aphid control and Methoxychlor is for flea beetle and com bor er moth control. (One nint of Nicot ne Su’phate may be substituted if Malathion is not available) Dus* 10% Zerlate, and 4% Malathion, at 30 lbs per acre (Malthion can be omitted af ter first spray, if aphids ap pear to be cleaned out) Farmers should thoroughly cover leaves, stems and fru t with spray or dust Good cov erage is essent-al at all ti mes to prevent disease spores from entering, and affecting the plant, Sloat pointed out. “Farmers should be extra careful to avoid contaminati on of streams, ponds, or wat er supp’des with spray ma terial Sloat sta + ed.
