Fruit to United Kingdom Goodjaiospccts for sale of sub ,-tantial quantities of U S. fruit (.0 the United Kingdom for dol lars for the first time since World War II were reported today by the U. S Department ot Agricul ture Such sales would be a ma lor step toward regaining the British dollar market for U S fruit produceis, according to USDA spokesmen. Department optimism toward possibility of U S fruit exporters making commercial dollar sales to Britain was based upon a re cent announcement by the Board of Trade m London indicating that about $2O million (f. o. b cost) would be allocated for im ports of fresh, canned and dried fruit from the Dollar Area for the coming 1958-59 fruit season. The Dollar Area consists of U S., Cuba, Canada, and several Central Am erican countries The Board of Trade indicated that Britain would import no more fruit from the United States under currency conversion or aid piograms, such as Tile I of Pub lie Law 480 Most U. S. fruit ex ports to the United Kingdom since World War II have been financed under currency conver sion ” programs. S fruits, with the exception of limited quantities of apples, canned pineapples, and concentrated orange juice In order to continue fruit ship ments to the United Kingdom, the United States has negotiated sales of surplus fruit under cur rency conversion programs each season since 1953-54. These, how ever, were not entirely satisfac tory from the U. S trade stand point. This new program provides a continuing opportunity to market U.
