L Hed dleston and veterinarian W. J Hall (retired) of the Agnctultuial Research Center, Beltsville, Md.. prepared several types of killed virus, aqeous, emulsified, and alum-precipitated vaccines. The disease-causing Pasteurella multo- Cida organisms were killed by formalin or ethylene oxide. New Hampshire chickens were vaccinated with the test vaccines Then doses of Pasteurella multo oda were given to the birds at various intervals after vaccina tion Unvaccinaled chickens were kept as controls for each vaccine used on the birds The researchers found that a single dose of water-in-01'1 emulsi fied vaccine gave excellent im munity for 9 months It should give adequate protection under ■ndustry conditions for the laying jear. (It has been reported that emulsified vac cines can be diluted 100,000 fold and still be effective, whereas nonemulsified vaccines diluted only 100-fold aren’t effective) Researchers found that two doses of aqueous-suspended vac cines were more effective than one in maintaining immunity But a single dose of emulsified vac cine was better than two doses ot aqueous vaccine The emulsified capsular vac cine (one where an enzjme is used to dissolve bacterial cap sules into a suspension) gave ef fective immunity for at least 25 weeks Although the alum-precipitated vaccine was slightly more effec tive than the chicken embryo vac cine (made from fowl cholera in fected embryos), neither was par ticularly satisfactory for piactical field use Dairy marketing specialists at Kansas State College, Manhattan.
